Hellina Half-Step Blow Away to start. Are you kidding me?! Absolutely love this opening trifecta. While not as strong as the prior year's July 4th showing at Orchard Park (Truckin' Up To Buffalo), you really can't go wrong with anything from this summer '90 tour. Dave and Co. recently treated us to this show on the Shakedown Steam. Thanks, y'all!

I love this ship more than any other, there’s so much wisdom and passion in Jerry’s voice and his solo is perfect. Bobby, Brent really stand out as well. This was Brent’s last cruise on the Ship.

Lots of great reviews here- what a magnificent job recording this show. Someone mentioned earlier that the Hell opener 'got behind' and it is true which in my mind, makes it my favorite. Crazy fingers gets dialed in on this tune- what an opener I can't see how we ever went wrong with Hell in a Bucket. It was an incredible weekend. Foxboro was over the top as well. Great heavens. Enjoy!

Besides the amazing CSN opener.. this show always reminds me of the observation I made to my friend about the second set opener.. three kids of women and the ship of fools that follows them..
Great show. Good times. I always loved Rich Stadium.

I can feel this day like yesterday. Very hot, sunny, just enough of a breeze. Great scene - at least as far as I recall - outside the show.
First set:
Bucket - I am of the opinion that this song was great when it was looser and more jammed out in '83 - '85. Good version - but wished Bob had chosen another.
Half-step - just fantastic. Jerry - little did we know - was having (one of) the best years of his post-coma crash. He delivers and then some on this.
Blow Away - always liked Brent. Never cared for his lead songs...but this was very well done.
Bob's cowboy songs - Cumberland>River would have been better.
Loose Lucy - Again, Garcia just digging into it. Real Good time, indeed.
Let it Grow - Bob delivers here - probaby his strongest song of the set.
Set 2:
When the boys were tuning - I turned to my friend and said: " I here Sugar Magnolia - but that can't be..." It was and we loved it. Very cool - I agree with everyone...the transition into Scarlet may be one of the more seemless threads the band has ever sowed.
Here is where I think the show COULD have been a top 20 all time (ok, maybe top 30). Bag Women are Smarter for either Fire or Eyes, or JAM here. Who knows what would have happened. Love the Women - but not at this point in the show. Oh, well.
Ship - many find this a downer. I am more of a Comes a Time fan. But still found Jerry (once again) on top and he opens the door for one of the best Truckin's in 5 years. Jam is beyond description.
Post Space is really great. Esp Wheel, and the SSDD Sandwhich ending.
Really - no complaints. Last time for me. And it was a great way to go . Thanks to the Band and the Good Lord for keeping Jer around an extra 9 years.

***** five star show! Great audio and fantastic
playing. This is def. one of the best on IA.
sugaree: very tight and the audio is awesome. The jam will get you high....
Minglewood: starts off slow but then jerry takes it crazy and it just bumps and bumps then it rocks in that minglewood way. lets not forget the boys on the beat.
candyman: Jerry's vocal are way right one. another great version. The space lead wonders you and wanders out there. the candyman IS IN town.
Me and my Uncle: standard fare but have you paid to ride that stageain the moral is clear....
Loser: nice and sweet and slow. no Im not drinking that hard liquor but let this song shine
and Jerry makes it so. This song is one of my favs and Jerry blows it out to the extreme.
LL: it goes through the usual than brings out the lightning.
supplication: On FIRE!

Just Wanted to say " Remember this high Time to all my friend, whom I haven't seen in years. This Show was one of the best times of my life, Though I rember those summers were full of good times and scarlet memories...
This show may start out a lil average for first half of Bucket, But from there I think most will agree that The Deadheaads that overfilled Rich Stadium in Buffalo that summer, were feeling the Love from the band. I believe we were all trying to give the guys our soaring emotions for showing us such a high time.
Warmeed up by Bobby's Bucket, everything was kikkin' in nice when Jerry let loose his warning that he was feeling good with the latter half of Halfstep. We were literally Blown Away by Brent ( What a Rendition!!!)
Mame Tried and Mexicali Seemed almost perfect tunes, for The Perfect day... I still remember the Jaw-dropping amazed feeling we all shared as the first notes of Lucy sprang forth... Who was telling who? was Jerry Thanking us or were we all thanking Him for the REAL GOOD TIME???
WE all shouted and screamed for and with Bob that it was All Over Now. And Jerry Calmed us with another jaw dropping surprize.... and we ALL knew WE were Living The Good life that day!!!
Download this cause There's Nothing Like A Dead Show!!!!! The communication between the band and crowd, in Buffalo, (1989 as well!) Capture this sentiment ( fact?) like no other.... maybe I'm biased, since I was there...
As you can tell, I have nothing bad to say about this show. FIVE Stars *****

Subject: CSN was good - beautiful day
We took the long road trip up to Buffalo and did the whole thing in 24 hours - it was a seriously beautiful day and i remember CSN were really very good - I mean like what took me so long to see these guys good and all their classic songs - struck a real hippie chord in me and I was groovin - anyway - get all they way up there and where we end up hanging out - we bump into all kinds of people we know - who we had no idea were coming to the show - it was cool - some of them sitting right near us - others as we made our way around the venue - it was like a class reunion.
I was already to sleep in the back of my car - who knows - who's lawn I was parked in - or how I found the car after all day but we spent all night hanging out - exhausted I thought I'd just flip the hatch back up and throw ourselves under some blankets and catch some zzz's - we were woefully unprepared for the camp out scene and there were plenty of pitched tents - to remind us it was all spur of the moment - balloons going way into the night it was a real nice after gig chill out - stumbling from yard to yard. I think I was in that guys back yard by the stadium - had to be - we'll we are getting ready to hunker down for the night blankets out and the whole nine yards ready to crawl in when the rains came, the sky opened up around midnight and we made our getaway. Still on adrenaline driving like a fiend as the sun came up in rush hour traffic - feeling like Neil behind the wheel himself....
I really liked all the Mars Hotel stuff in the set list - Ship of Fools - well those are just great lyrics and what is with that psychotic laugh track running through space and Brent playing that B-Horror movie film score around it - prior to Wheel - awesome - let's see Britney do that - hey she just might at this point - god bless the Grateful Dead - 5 stars for the event - and good solid Dead show - what a long strange trip indeed !

Subject: Dosin up to Buffalo
Subject: Dosin up to Buffalo
Buffalo holds a very near and dear place for me (in regards to Dead Shows). Between 85 and 93 I saw 106 shows and though this was not the best of em (very close though), it was the most fun. One of my best friends yards bordered the camping (right by the 7/11). His parents always went away for the weekend of the Dead. Our other buddy's Dad owns the Miller distributorship in Buffalo so we had kegs of beer, a pig on a spit and probaly the largest illegal drug market not 20 feet from the yard. So nice when touring to have a stop where you can clean up, sleep well and re-charge. Another bonus is their friends worked security (all heads too) and they had a bag of goodies for us when we went in (some of us heads didn't hide our stash very well and they had to confiscate stuff that was flagrant).
We've got a really big show for you here though. Long and fun first set. Highlights abound. Very solid throughout with the 1/2 Step (Phil is all over it like white on rice and it is the only one of the summer), High Time and Let It Grow finishing Win, Place and Show to me. Blow Away just finishes outside of the money, though not by much. The whole field was game though.
Second Set starts with a short but hot Sugar Mag into, what's this?? Scarlet. Whoooaaaa!!!! Nice, but short too into a fun Women Smarter (it was alot of fun). Ship of Fools gets slows down the pace just a bit and explores the innerworld the way Jerry's tunes always doo. It is a very good Ship. Truckin' is way above average (the Buffalo line shakes the house) with a great Jam after it. The Jam definetely has an TOO feel to it and it is hot.
Drums is really good, with manic voices being heard everywhere. They come back into a sweet little Jam that leads us into a beautiful and tasty Wheel is not to be missed. Brent and Phil lead the way into a Gimme Some Lovin that is just alot of fun. Wharf Rat is very soulful, but isn't the homerun that it can be. Around and Around is upbeat and always a solid choice, just not stellar but it does lead us into a fun Sunshine Daydream that gives us closure to one of the better (IMHO best) summer shows of 1990.
Brokedown, what can you say about it. It's my favorite encore and one of my favorite Dead tunes. Just so sweet and earnest, and this one is no exception.
Over all this is a 5 star example of why summer of 1990 was special muscially.
Fare Thee Well I love you more than words can tell

I rank this show as #1 out of the 39 shows I saw btwn 1987-95. Stellar playing throughout. Jerry in particular could not be touched--just unconscious.
Hard rocking ten-song 1st set features an unbelievable Half Step, killer Loose Lucy, fun All Over Now, sick Let It Grow, the last ever Blow Away and a sweet High Time.
The entire 2nd set is a Sunshine Daydream of epic proportions. Not to be missed! Sugar Mag into Scarlet into Women are Smarter to start the 2nd set was an incredible experience. The jam after Truckin' is on fire--one of the best Truckins in GD history imo. Drums is a complete mindfuck. Wow! People oozed out of the stadium that night, as they had been thoroughly liquefied by the amazing sets.

I think the only downpoint of this show was the Women R after Scarlet. They were both played well, but I was READY for a Fire at this show. Always a treat to get the Sugar Mags sandwich. For purely jamming purposes though, Foxboro contained alot more of it. I also think the 89 Buffalo show was stronger, just as I thought the 89 Foxboro was stronger than 90.
Still, a must own however.

This was my last show with Brent behind the boards. Definitely went out with a bang. No one moment was over the top, but the mix of songs, the energy, and the perfect 90 degree, cloudless day made this a killer show. Tons of people were looking for tickets and we needed one--thought it would be hopeless, but we got "miracled" the second we walked in the lot. Great sound, solid performance.

A nice just over medium paced bucket to open this one. This may not be a matrix but you can still pick up the swells of crowd noise. Spirits must have been so high during the summer tour, the dead were really back to having their worst shows still rock the shit out of people. And those shows were few and far between. 10 days later man, unbelievable. Love ya brent. The farewell to youÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂat the end of the second refrain, around 2:27ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂcheck Jerry out! Belting doesnÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt describe. Wow. 1/2 step is one of those tunes that was defined by how well jerry was playing/singingÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂit really doesnÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt matter if everyone else was ripping it unless Jerry was too. Obviously its Jer so that could be said for every songÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂbut I donÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt think it applies quite like it does hereÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂsame goes for Jack Straw, Loose Lucy, Promised LandÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ.ya dig? I hope that made sense. Well anyhoo, Jer is near perfect on this ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂý Step. Nice blow away if you are a fan. Also a nice well played Mexicali. Speaking of loose lucyÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂkickin lucy. Jer once again gets fully immersed in the song and really throws everything on the table. As a fan of this song I always dig it. ItÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs no different than 99% of the other versions but all over now is a fun tune and they play it just fine here. The high time is real pretty; JerryÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs voice is just in the right place on this night. If the rest of the band had been able to keep up with brent on the let it grow something truly special could have happened. All the same, despite some timing issues and miscues the let it grow still rocks out pretty hard, just not tightly.
The sugar mags is a nice opener but the segue into scarlet is what makes this band timeless. A short sugar is one thing but a short scarlet, and then > man smart. Who knows? As a fan of ship of fools only out of context I usually snooze button this tune while listening to a show, and I donÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt think this is a particularly lively version but the placement after an odd-ball beginning to the set is good. They opened with the set with 3 set openers back to back to back, skipped two regular song progressions and jammed out the least likely choice. Ship of Fools just fits here. The first notes of truckin are nice to hear, by 15 seconds it seems like nothing else would have fit right here. Guess the theme? The song selection in this set is awesome! I donÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt see any mention of the TMNS allusions at the end of truckinÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂlisten for it. I damn near fell off my chair for about two secondsÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂcan you imagine this jam including a full MLBÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂdamm. How about the break down though. 4:28!!
I think it is a real shame that so many folks turn off to extended drum jams. If you are there to party I guess it makes sense but the folks who come for the music and to get downÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂseems like drums would be gold yet I always see everyone running for the bathroom or standing around with their hands in their pockets. If I were at this gig I would have sacrificed a yakÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂthis drums rules. Space is worth the listen, well, the first 5 minutes for sure anyway. The Wheel drop in by jerry is 100% perfect. Unfortunately there are some sound problems in the mix. It takes a couple seconds to get things right. BrentÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs mad rant saves an otherwise weak gimme some lovin. They donÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt really play into wharf rat, its more like jerry just started playing itÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂFor those of you who say this that and the other about Jerry vs. XÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ.I refer you to 8:10 of wharf ratÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂput a little distortion behind the man and he craps of the chops of most anyone.
BrentÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs playing on around and around is greatÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂotherwise standard issue. You knew it was coming, and here it is. A nice crisp sunshine daydream, with some stellar work from phil. JerryÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs voice gets continually rougher throughout the night but he still gives it all his got for brokedown palace. Not the best of the tour but the second set is definitely worth the listen, soÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂlisten to it!

CSN opened. I really started getting off by the time their set was over. Don't remember to much after that except for the bush that was dancing with me and actually noticing the rotation of the earth on it's axis through the universe -bold as love.
Did anyone go to the rainbow gathering just after this show. A wonderful summer it was.

This has great sound quality but I just don't think this one's up there with some others from this tour. 1st set has good moments (High Time) but is not off the hook. Sugar>Scarlet is song only, no jams at all on either. Jerry finally starts really rippin on Women, and the jam after Truckin is real good. This one is nowhere close to the same league as Louisville, for instance, from this tour. I didn't see this one, so am not as sentimental....

The day Brent Mydland's beautiful soul flew free, my heart was truly broken. It was two years before I could bring myself to go to one last show and I knew it could never be the same for me. On this, the 15th anniversary of what, in my heart, I have always considered my final show, I want to say thank you for ten remarkable years. My life is much richer for the experience. Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell.

Since performances are subjective I will not comment on this show other than to say that I like it. The sound is phenomenal. If you like the set list then have faith that the recording will not let you down.

Unbelievable experience, incredible day. Went from Syracuse late morning with my sister's old boyfriend and a couple of his friends. 16 years old and really never been out of the suburbs and with the freaks on such a large scale. Took 6 hits, lost my ride, and instead of freaking out just enjoyed the day. As a solo flyer made my way all the way to the front during set 1 then all the way at the top for the start of set 2. You guessed it, back in the front row for post space. Crazy. Never in my life have I experienced such an event and it changed my life forever and opened up so many worlds. Remember beautiful weather, Crosby on stage during Half step, the crazy energy through that start of the second set ( Nobody seems to mention that crazy midi on Women!), the pulsing through my body of Brent's keys and Jer's guitar flurry on Gimme' some lovin'. All too much. Of course until my next show 9/20/90. Then I became the 'responsible' one guiding my friend through his first show. THANK YOU to that sweet women and two guys that gave me a wonderful ride home out of there way. Never saw a more glorius sunrise than thatmorning, the sky was all pink and orange. Had to sit on bench on a nature path in my development and let it soak in for awhile. Hell, 29 shows and 15 years later it still is. So Many Roads indeed. Bless you boys.

Thanks Brent!!! I remember being way up front when CSN was on...Jerry was watching from stage left when they started to play teach your children. A bunch of us tried to coax Jerry into jumping on the pedal steel that some other tool was playing at the time. He just laughed and gave us a nod. Oh well...I did get to see the pedal steel on the 87 Dylan tour so I was more forgiving:) GREAT SHOW!!

DL this now. One of my top 5 of all time.
The sound quality is there on this one.
If I were stranded on a desert island, this would be there with me.
Bucket: they lose time but get it back by the end.
1/2 Step: 2nd only to Albany 90', Brent is on FIRE..
Bolw Away: 2nd only to JFK 89'
The rest of the 1st set is hot too. Jerry on the midi...Check out the High time... Sweet.
Set Two: This is the best Sugar Mgs> Scarlet.
Longer jam at Alpine in 89', But does not have 1/2 the charachter of this show. Far superior.
Ship o fools. good
Truckin jam is good too, but the jam that follows is off the hook...
The post space is up there with the rest of the show. Maybe even the highlight.. get it while you can..

Barn burner from start to finish. Half Step is smoothe as silk...High Time is superb and the Let It Grow...wow! Sugar Mag> Scarlet will blow your mind and the Truckin is one of they're finest. Need I say more? Great sounding SBD but Gimme Some Lovin' has a short drop out about one minute in and The Wheel skips at about 1:40. (minor flaws)

the best day of my life was 7-4-89 Buffalo...but the was clearly the greatest whole concert experience in my life...to this day the only show that I have seen that even comes close was P & F 4-20-2001....why? Magic....Csn played a great set with Brent looking on in the wings...I can remember it all like it happened tonight...Csn, then Grateful Dead....WOW!~ even thoough I do not care for the Buffalo bills...Rich Staduim will always hold a very special place in my heart..seeing as the two greatest days of my life were spent outside and inside this stadium....also my last Brent show......I'll never know what may have happened if he had lived longer...but maybe, just maybe, Jerry would of held on longer. it has always been my feeling that when Brent Died...he took Jerry with him....anyways...thank you both for the memories...and archive you ROCK!!

Had to go to Buffalo just to get the tickets, as they weren't available 30 miles outside of Buffalo, and damn worth the trip too. Just the parking lot of the shopping mall was like a show itself! Must've been almost a thousand people there. Blow away was hotter than almost anything. First set, made the tempo of the show as a whole, and after Blow Away, and Loose Lucy, you knew the 2nd was going to rock! Again, West Trenton Crew made it there for that. This is the best show I ever saw, and unfortunately, last one with Brett, and he rocked that day, and didn't look unhappy at all. Wheel still sends shivers up my back, and tears down my cheeks, cause the beauty of that show was unreplaceable, and beyond words... Simply passionate energy. Jerry and Brett ruled that show, and Phil was in a good mood too. All so tight. Do enjoy!

Being that I didn't start seeing a lot of shows until '91 this may be the best show I've attended. I was 17 and I had the biggest crush on this girl I was with.. Sugar>Scarlet transition, midi on Women, Truckin Jam, Drums. I also love the laughing sound and the church bell sound found in Space during this period. One of my favortites from summer '90.

Beautiful transition from the Sugar Mag to Scarlet...indeed it's quintessential Brent magic!!!While I thought the lack of a Fire was a letdown, the show is still worth a download. Very high energy with solid first set and post drums. This was one of my best sounding tapes back in those ancient times, even better as a SHN. The music jumps out at you!!! 1990 Dead...was their any better? Thanks archive!!

It was Brent, not Jerry, who initiated the scarlet, which is the smoothest transition between these two songs I've ever heard (much better than the long pause from the Beacon Theater 6.15.76). Wish they'd stuck with the momentum into Fire instead of veering awkwardly into Women r smarter.
